RANGERS defeated Premier League team West Ham 3-1 this evening as part of their preseason training.
Summer signings’ goals Ryan Kent’s goal was followed by strikes from Tom Lawrence and Rabbi Matondo, before Tomas Soucek restored parity for David Moyes’ team.
For the first time this season, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men took the field in Glasgow on a warm evening in front of a home crowd.
In the starting XI, John Souttar and Antonio Colak made their Ibrox debuts, and in the second half, Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence made their first home outings.
James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, John Souttar, and Borna Barisic made up Rangers’ starting back four. Jon McLaughlin started the game in goal.
In the middle were John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, and Glen Kamara, with Scott Wright and Ryan Kent assisting Antonio Colak up top.
With 15 minutes remaining, Manuel Lanzini was on the move after receiving a pass from midfield, and Jon McLaughlin made a wonderful save.
The attacker drove into the area and got a shot off, but McLaughlin kept his ground to stop it and then managed to get a hand on the rebound to remove the threat.
Nayef Aguerd made a powerful challenge to stop Antonio Colak from shooting from within the West Ham area as Rangers also appeared to be searching for a sight of goal at the other end.
Before the break, Declan Rice was given a yellow card for a late challenge on Ryan Kent as the Rangers midfielder tried to advance the Light Blues by gliding past the West Ham middle.
A shot by Said Benrahma was stopped by Borna Barisic before it struck the side netting and was cleared for a corner by the opposition, keeping the score scoreless at halftime.
At the half, Giovanni van Bronckhorst made three substitutions to his team, replacing John Souttar, Ryan Jack, and Scott Wright with Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo, and James Sands.
The two summer signings who were introduced at halftime teamed up well only three minutes into the second half to give Rangers the lead.
The move was initiated by captain James Tavernier, who passed the ball to Rabbi Matondo from the right side of the field. He cut the ball back from the byline, finding Tom Lawrence, who then beat Lukasz Fabianski with a beautiful low finish.
Within minutes, Rangers had a 2-0 lead. James Tavernier once more initiated the play, sending the ball infield to Tom Lawrence, who then passed it to Ryan Kent on the left. The winger delivered a strong shot that found its way into the goal on the first attempt.
Rangers had a great start to the second half and had three goals by the hour mark.
This time for Rabbi Matondo, it was another goal in a debut. The ball was deflected into the path of the 20-year-old, who made a good combination with Tom Lawrence before scoring his first goal for the Light Blues.
In an attempt to get a goal back in this friendly, the visitors’ Jarrod Bowen had a shot blocked. Then, Jon McLaughlin made another outstanding save when he got a good hand to a shot from Pablo Fornals and pushed it out for a corner.
Tomas Soucek was able to get a touch on the ball after it was swung into the box from the ensuing set-piece and guide it past Mclaughlin.
